Can’t Uninstall BitTorrent? – Complete BitTorrent Removal Guide

I am running Windows 8.1. Yesterday my little sister downloaded and installed BitTorrent on my PC. I don’t want this software and go to Programs and Features to remove it. However, it doesn’t show up in the list of installed programs. Yet when I restart/turn on my computer bittorrent automatically launches. Information about the program


bt-iconBitTorrent is a program developed by BitTorrent Inc., an Internet technology company based in San Francisco. It is also a peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol created by Bram Cohen, designed to distribute data in such a way that the original distributor would be able to decrease bandwidth usage while still being able to reach at least the same amount of people. Users can use it to download files (movies, games, documents, videos, MP3 music and other materials) and share them. It makes users’ downloading files fast. The software is compatible with multiple platforms, including all Windows operating systems, MAC and Android. It is available in both a free and a paid version.


Problems you may encounter when uninstalling BitTorrent:


  • The program disappears from Start > All programs area.
  • The program doesn’t appear in the list of installed programs.
  • You can’t find any BitTorrent folder in the C:Program Files and C:Program Files (x86).
  • You get a window reading “you need permission to do that” when trying to delete the whole bitTorrent folder.

Manually remove BitTorrent from your computer


Usually, the third-party applications can be removed from the computer via Windows uninstaller. If you no longer need the program, follow the guide below to remove it via Control Panel.

Windows XP

Click Start button > Control Panel > double click Add/Remove Programs.




A list of all installed programs will show up.

Find BitTorrent and select it, then click on Remove button.

Windows 7/Vista

Click on Start button > Control Panel > Programs and Features or Uninstall a program under Programs category depending on the View by: selected by you.




From the list of programs that are installed on your PC, find and highlight the program you want to remove.

Windows 8/8.1

Right click on Start button > select Programs and Features from the Power User menu.




All the installed programs will be displayed in the Programs and Features window.

Search for BitTorrent and click on it, then click on Uninstall button to get rid of it. Follow the prompts given to complete the uninstall.





Windows 10

  • Press Windows key and click on Settings in the Start menu.
  • Click on System in the Settings screen.
  • Click on Apps &Features on the left side and all the installed programs will appear on the right side.
  • Select the unwanted program and click on Uninstall button.
  • A window will pop up soon and you need to click on Uninstall button to confirm it.

How to boot into safe mode?


In most cases, safe mode makes it easier to access your system without any bad programs getting in your way. You’d better remove all Removable disks, such as, CDs, Floppy disks, and USB drives, before starting PC in safe mode. This will make sure none of these attempts to boot the PC.


Windows XP/7/Vista


Start your computer by clicking on the power button (if it is already on, please restart it).

Then tap the F8 key repeatedly until you see the Advanced Boot Options screen where “Safe Mode” option is provided. (If Windows Splash screen shows up instead, you need to restart the PC and try again.)




Use the up and down arrow keys to choose Safe Mode and then press the Enter key.




Your Windows will start in Safe Mode.


Windows 8/10

This approach uses the System Configuration Tool, assuming that you can enter and boot up Microsoft Windows 8/10 normally.

Press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard simultaneously to open the Run window.




Type msconfig in the Run text field and press Enter key or click on OK button.




Select the Boot tab in the System Configuration window and then check Safe boot checkbox with Minimal is selected under Boot options.




Click the OK button and restart your machine by clicking on Restart button when the following pop-up appears.

Your device will automatically boot into Safe Mode.

In safe mode, go to the Programs and Features or Add/Remove Programs, and then find and remove BitTorrent.



Note: What if BitTorrent doesn’t appear in the installed programs list? Usually, this may be caused by a corruption somewhere in program. Try reinstalling it and see if it is listed there. If it still doesn’t work, you can manually delete the files and registry keys of the program to uninstall it.

However, deleting the registry keys incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. If you don’t feel comfortable modifying the registry, use a professional uninstaller to help delete the program instead.


How to get rid of BitTorrent if it doesn’t show up on the uninstall list?


Warning: This approach is involved in modifying Windows Registry and deleting program files. Any incorrect deletion of registry keys or entries may lead to terrible consequences on your system. ONLY advanced computer users are advised to use registry editor to uninstall the unwanted program. If you have been ready for it, follow the steps below to perform the task.


1. Locate and delete the directory C:Program FilesBitTorrent (substituting the actual location of your Program Files dir)




2. Open registry editor by typing regedit in the Run box or Search box and then clicking on the regedit in the search results.




Find and remove the following registry keys:


HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTMIMEDatabaseContent Typeapplication/x-bittorrent






Note: Before deleting the registry, please make a backup of it so that you can restore the Windows registry easily in case something goes wrong. To do that, see How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.
