Recently I downloaded and installed VLC media player and my Chrome’s homepage started to be hijacked by Play-Bar.net, which opens automatically in a new tab every time I start the Chrome browser. I tried to delete it from Chrome’s homepage settings but it still shows up on the next browser start. Also ran the Norton security tool to scan the system but nothing was picked up. Though the site seems normal and also allows me to search for information, I don’t trust it much because it redirects to a site called “search.safefinder.com” then yahoo site. Does anyone know how to get rid of Play-Bar.net completely?
What is Play-Bar.net?
Play-Bar.net is a browser hijacker that changes users’ browser settings like the default homepage, new tab and the default search engine. Similar to Web-start.org, Webstarts.biz and Yourconnectivity.net, this browser hijacker can get into the PC by being bundled with other freeware. For example, if you download and install a free application which had this browser hijacker bundled into its installation from the Internet, your browser may be affected. Usually, there is a checkbox during the installation process that asks you if you’d like to change the homepage to Play-Bar.net or install other items. If you miss it and agree to install them, your browser settings will be altered. Many popular browser including Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome could be the target of this hijacker. If you carelessly invite this unwanted item to the PC, the following page will show up whenever the affected browser is started:
The site itself is not a virus, it’s more likely a potentially unwanted program. It provides search services similar to Google and Bing but we don’t encourage you to use it. Since browser hijackers are designed to make money by forcing users to visit a specific site and displaying advertising, it’s not a good idea to choose such a search provider. If you do a search on this site, you will find that the page is redirected to “search.safefinder.com” then yahoo search results page. There are some sponsored ads related to what you searched for in the search results. (As the images below shown)
The browser hijacker not only changes your browser homepage and search engine, but also collects your information for commercial uses. When you use its product, anonymous information including your IP address, referral data, and browser and platform type and your personally identifiable information, such as your name or e-mail address, will be gathered by the program. Though the Blisbury Sites claim that your information is protected, you may receive many ads and emails from third parties or the site itself. Please note that the site is responsible for the content or ads promoted or displayed by it. So be cautious when you see ads or links when surfing unfamiliar websites, for some may mislead you into downloading fake or even malicious programs.
How to prevent browser hijackers like Play-Bar.net?
As above mentioned, browser hijackers can be distributed by being bundled with other free applications. To avoid such PUPs, you need to be very careful when downloading and installing software from the Internet. Stay away from those websites that have bad reputation and never download software from unknown websites.
In addition, always choose the custom/advanced installation. This allows you to decline the special offers like Play-Bar.net during the installation. Some legitimate programs may be also bundled with additional items that you don’t need. If you get used to choosing the quick/express install, those unwanted items may be installed unknowingly.
It’s also to keep an advanced anti-malware program on the PC. Anti-malware software can safeguard your PC against a lot of cyber infections and block malicious websites. If some changes made to your browser settings, it will inform you of that promptly.
