You may consider Search.myway.com as a general search website that provides the search service as what Google, Bing and Yahoo do at the first sight. But believe it or not, Search.myway.com is actually a browser hijacker that could harm your PC if not removed timely. A commonly known characteristic of a browser hijacker is to modify Web users’ browser settings without any permision – typically change the homepage and default search engine to its own – and won’t allow the users to reset all changed settings back to the previous states. Search.myway.com does have this characteristic. Our computer security researchers have confirmed this. When downloaded onto the tested computer, this browser hijacker quickly changes the Chrome browser’s homepage as its own page. Below is how the affected Chrome browser looks:
From this page, you can see different elements: page URL (http://search.myway.com/home/index.jhtml), page name (MyWay Home Page), a search box with the words “Enhanced by Google” next to it, and several quick links to your favorite sites like Yahoo, Facebook,Twitter, Linkin, etc. It seems that there’s nothing outlandish about this page. But you shouldn’t let disguises fool you. The appearance of this page often means your computer has been infected by the Search.myway.com browser hijacker and your browser’s settings should have been modified by it without your knowledge. As shown in th image below, when our security researchers open the affected Chrome browser and go to the setting page, they find the homepage has been changed to the browser hijacker’s own page.
Besides, our tests show that, simply deleting the URL from the Home Page field cannot permanently remove the browser hijacker. After restart the Chrome browser, the unwanted page still appears. It is infered that this browser hijacker has made changes to the Windows registry settings, which is a must-do operation performed by almost all browser hijackers. To keep itself run automatically whenever the Windows is launched, a browser hijacker will change the registry settings, namely add a start-up entry to the Windows registry. Even though you have deleted its URL from the browser, it can recover as long as its start-up entry remains. When opening the registry editor and search for “myway”, our security researchers find a entry associated with the browser hijacker as expected. See the image below:
Now it is clear why many users reflect that their homepage is maliciously changed by a browser hijacker and any attempt to reset the homepage turns out to be failure. Users need to do more things other than deleting the website URL from the affected web browsers.
What are browser hijackers used for?
Recently, browser hijackers seem to be increasing at an alarming rate globally and have become a big trouble to web users when they use web browsers. What are browser hijackers used for? In fact, they are mainly used to generate revenue by interfering with your normal online searches. They force you to use their own search pages, try to redirect you to a series of target websites, and thereby boost traffic of the website and increase profits. In the meantime, they record everything you have done on the affected web browser, what keywords you have typed, what website you have visited, and what ads you have clicked. Beside, they gather your non-personally identifiable information like IP address, browser type, system version, and location. This information is generally used for ads that are better targeted at you. Some extremely malicious browser hijackers even download and install key loggers or spyware to steal your confidential information like credit card numbers and passwords. Certainly, you won’t need to worry too much. As long as you get rid of the browser hijacker on your PC timely, your sensitive information won’t be stolen.
