An extension called unTabs got installed on my Chrome browser without my permission. It behaves like a malware. It links me to another website, but I cannot disable or delete it. Is there any effective solution?

Google Chrome extensions are small programs, usually written in HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, that can modify and enhance the functionality of your browser. Extension authors often distribute their extensions using the Chrome Developer Dashboard to publish to the Chrome Web Store.

However, they can also be used for malicious purposes. Some extensions available in Chrome web store are not designed to add new features to your browser and personalize your browsing experience; instead, they are malware extensions used to redirect Internet users to bogus sites and junk offers.

UnTabs is such a malware extension which can cause various issues, including pop up ads, spying, data theft and more. If this malware extension has been installed on your browser, you should remove it immediately, so as to avoid the unwanted problems.

However, the appearance of a malware extension called unTabs will change their mind. In fact, there is no an unconditioned secure place for Internet users to download and install software or extension, since cyber hackers always find the way to spread malware. Although seemingly legitimate, UnTabs is actually a fraudulent extension released by online crooks to perform some malicious things, like injecting ads, redirecting browsers to unsafe sites, and collecting browser data, etc. To trick users into installing this malware extension on their chrome browser, it is officially described as an amazing extension that can help enhance browsing experience by putting all tabs in one in order to reduce memory usage.

However, this extension doesn’t get a good name in the Chrome Web Store. It only gets one star in the rating due to the fact that it behaves like a malware. Many users who have initiatively or unintentionally installed it complain this extension is pure malware and very hard to remove. Many of them have tried every method they find, including uninstalling every suspicious program from Windows, performing system restore, and even using security tools like Malwarebytes, but still cannot uninstall this malware extension. What Is UnTabs Used For?

Given Google Chrome’s popularity, more and more cyber crooks use its online web store to distribute malicious extensions via deceptive means. They try to make users install shady extensions like unTabs for some ulterior purposes. Now let’s see what this extension is used for:

  • Malvertising campaign

The malware extension may serve incessant ad offers. Whenever you browse the web, you will receive lots of annoying popup ads or fake software update notification on the webpage you are visiting.

  • Internet scams

When a user tries to access a specific website, such as Malwarebytes website, this malware extension may redirect users to another website which serves the downloading of some potentially unwanted programs or contains the get-rich-quick schemes, and various other scams.

  • Data Collection

Like many other malicious extensions, unTabs is also designed to track and collect users’ personal data. It is easy for it to do so, since it will require permissions to access all your data. Extensions have 10 different permissions ranging from “your physical location” to “all data on your computer and the websites you visit.” After the collecting the data, the extension will transfer them to its developers or some advertisers.

How to Completely Remove UnTabs Malware Extension?

For most users, it is very easy for them to remove a Google Chrome extension. They simply need to go to the page of Extensions (chrome://extensions), find out the specific extension and click the trashcan icon. The extension will be removed permanently. However, in some cases, users would find it hard to remove a certain extension which claims to be “Installed by Enterprise Policy” and there is no trashcan icon nearby for users to remove it.

This often means:
1. The extension is added to the extension list automatically and cannot be managed or disabled.
2. The extension is malicious and it adds registry entries that cannot be managed in Chrome settings.

We have mentioned that unTabs is very hard to remove, this is because it installs itself as an enterprise managed extension, namely it is “Installed by Enterprise Policy”.

In this case, we need to manually remove this extension from Windows and Google Chrome. This is some work but not a very hard task to perform. Just follow the removal steps given below:

Step 1: Reset all Group Policy objects using Command Prompt.

If you use Windows 7, you can click the Start menu and type command prompt into the search box. In the search result, right click the “Command Prompt” option and click “Run as administrator”.

run as admin

Then, put command prompt into the search box again, and this time, you should directly click the “Command Prompt” option.

click command prompt

If you use Windows 10, you can use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (admin).

A command prompt window will pop up as following:

Type the following three commands and press Enter on each line:

rd /S /Q “%WinDir%System32GroupPolicyUsers”

rd /S /Q “%WinDir%System32GroupPolicy”

gpupdate /force

type command lines

Finally, restart your computer. The commands will delete the folders where Group Policy settings are stored on your computer, and then the Windows will re-apply the default settings. And the “Installed by enterprise policy” permissions will now be removed from Chrome, and you should be able to remove the unTabs extension.

Step 2: Reset your Google Chrome browser to the default settings.

Open Google Chrome browser, click on the 3-bar icon in the top right corner and then click Settings.

Scroll down to the end of the page and click on Show advanced settings…

Scroll down to the end of the page again and then click on Reset settings button.

When a confirmation box pops up, click on Reset button to reset Google Chrome browser settings.
