I think every superhero fan should have seen Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War” by now. Most people would go to the cinema to see this film; while some may prefer to stay home and watch it online. Here I want to remind that, if you choose to watch this moive over the web, you should use caution – don’t click on any malicious links that pretend to allow you to download the moive, or else you might download malware on your PC. I am the living proof – I accidentally downloaded a malware called Surfvox.com on my computer when clicking on a link at a forum about ten days ago. Luckily, I have successfully removed that malware from my PC. In the following, I’d like to talk about this malware and share my experience on how to remove it completely.
Symptoms of the infection
☑ Your browser homepage, start page and search engine may get changed to Surfvox.com.
☑ You may fail to open some Windows programs like Task Manager or antivirus programs.
☑ There may be many annoying ads appearing on your browsers when you are browsing the web.
☑ You may get redirected to some unwanted websites that promote products you don’t want.
Here is how your browser looks when your computer gets infected by the browser hijacker:
As a computer user, you may have more or less heard of several types of malware like Trojans, worms, and viruses. But there is another type of malware you may not notice – browser hijacker. A browser hijacker is type of malware designed to change your browser setings without any permission. It can lead to the changes of your homepage, default search engine, start page, and new tab. Surfvox.com is such an annoying browser hijacker. It can be very annoying and nearly every user will choose to remove it from the computer.
Below is the problem description from a victim of this browser hijacker:
What is the browser hijacker used for? Generally, a browser hijacker is created to do these things: redirect users to particular websites, generate popup ads, and collect personal information. Different browser hijackers may have different functions and things they do in the victims’ computers might be varied, but they have one common objective – generate revenue for its creators. Surfvox.com is no exception. It is mainly used by its creators to collect personal information and display customized ads. After getting installed on your PC, this browser hijacker will attempt to collect your personal information and send it to third-party server. Then, it receives various targeted ads from the third-party server and display them on your browser.
The information collected by this browser hijacker may include your IP address, OS version, browser types, search queries, most-visited websites, etc. This information can help third-party advertisers understand your browsing behaviors and so as to deliver personalized ads on the webpage you are viewing. If you are interested in these ads and click on them, the creators of the browser hijacker will get paid by the advertisers. More clicks, more money. Now you see that, getting infected by Surfvox.com browser hijacker means your personal information might be illegally used by unknown people for marketing purpose.
One more problem should be pointed out that, you should avoid clicking on those ads shown by the browser hijacker. Why? It is not safe for your to do that. For one thing, those ads are usually not credible enough. You might be tricked into buying some useless products. For another thing, there may be some malicious links hidden under the ads, by clicking on which you will probably download some malware programs on your PC. This happens so often. You know cyber hackers are likely to spread malware via popup ads or suspicious links.

How does Surfvox.com spread?
Besides, this browser hijacker can spread through fake update alert window that pops up on your browser. For example, you may receive a popup window reminding you that, “Attention! Your browser is out of date. We recommend to update it. The new browser version will protect your computer from different internet-dangers and make it safer.” You might directly click on the DOWNLOAD button in order to download the update file without thinking too much. However, once the downloading is done, you probably find that what you have downloaded is a browser hijacker instead of the update file for your browser.
Cyber criminals can use various ways to distribute this browser hijacker. So, it is important that you surf the internet carefully. Only download software from trustworthy sources; don’t open unknown email attachments; avoid clicking suspicious links; ignore unreliable alert windows; keep away from malicious websites. But if you have unluckily got malware infections, please clean them as quickly as possible.
